Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at palmettolawnworks@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

  • Grubs: Larvae that feed on grass roots, causing brown patches. Look for them if you can easily pull up sections of turf. Treat in late spring/early summer with appropriate insecticides.
  • Chinch Bugs: Tiny insects that suck sap from grass blades, leading to irregular yellow or brown patches, especially in hot, dry areas. Often found in St. Augustinegrass. Insecticide applications are effective.
  • Mole Crickets: Tunnel through the soil, damaging roots and causing raised mounds. Treat in spring or early summer when they are small.
  • Fire Ants: While not directly damaging to the lawn, their mounds are unsightly and their stings are painful. Granular baits are effective for control.
  • Detection: Regularly inspect your lawn for discolored patches, thinning grass, or visible insects. Early detection is key. Consult a local extension office or lawn care professional for identification and specific treatment recommendations.

We recommend having your lawn mowed every 2 weeks in the spring and fall and weekly if you are fertilizing in the summer.

We offer both one-time and recurring services in the spring and fall, depending on your needs. This could vary during the summer depending on schedule and service  you are wanting.

  • Brown Patch: Appears as circular, brown, sunken patches, often with a darker outer ring (smoke ring). Common in St. Augustinegrass and Zoysiagrass during warm, humid weather.
  • Dollar Spot: Small, silver-dollar-sized circular patches of dead grass.
  • Large Patch: Similar to brown patch but often larger and irregular.
  • Prevention: Proper watering (deep and infrequent, in the early morning), good air circulation, proper mowing height, and balanced fertilization can help prevent many diseases.
  • Treatment: Fungicides can be used, but correct identification of the disease is crucial for effective treatment. Consult a professional if you suspect a serious disease.

  • Soil pH: Johns Island soils tend to be slightly acidic to neutral (pH 5.5-7.0), which is generally suitable for warm-season grasses (ideal pH range 6.0-7.0).
  • Soil Test: A soil test is the most accurate way to determine your soil's pH and nutrient levels.
  • Amendments: If your soil is too acidic, lime can be applied to raise the pH. If it's too alkaline (less common in Johns Island), sulfur can be used to lower it. Organic matter (compost) can always improve soil structure, water retention, and nutrient availability in sandy Johns Island soils.

  • Treatment Effectiveness: Many granular lawn treatments require watering in to activate them and move them into the soil where they can be effective.
  • Overall Health: Proper watering (deep and infrequent, typically 1.5 inch of water per week, applied in the early morning) promotes deeper root growth, making the lawn more resilient to pests, diseases, and environmental stress, thus reducing the need for chemical interventions. Overwatering or frequent shallow watering can lead to disease and shallow roots.

  • Timing is Key: To effectively prevent weeds, apply pre-emergent herbicides when soil temperatures reach 55 degrees Fahrenheit. This typically occurs in February-March for spring weeds and again in August-October for fall and winter weeds.
  • How it Works: Pre-emergents create a barrier in the soil that stops weed seeds from germinating, reducing the need for post-emergent (after they sprout) weed control.
